Fall Capsule Wardrobe: What, Why, How?

Fall Capsule Wardrobe: What, Why, How?

Being a fashionista, I like to keep a few of my essential pieces for the season on a clothing rack that acts as a display or focal point in my creative space. All this time, I didn't realize what I was creating is what many fashion and style influencers would call a capsule wardrobe. You may think this term is new, but it has actually been around for yeaaars. Who knew?!

What is a Capsule Wardrobe?

Capsule wardrobe is a term that is said to be coined by London boutique owner, Susie Faux, in the 1970s. It is basically a collection of essential items of clothing that would never go out of style. Now, some stick to the basics and create capsule wardrobes with only neutral colors. If you are anything like myself, you love color and prints, so my capsule wardrobe will typically include 1-2 statement pieces for the season.

Why You Should Build a Capsule Wardrobe

For me, it started with wanting to be able to grab and go. My favorite black leather jacket I wear with everything, or my black jeans I can dress up or down, I never had to put much thought into it. Capsule wardrobes are honestly created to simplify your wardrobe. It takes the stress out of putting together a "look", as well as saves you on time getting out the door.

" I want everyone to wear what they want and mix it in their own way. That, to me, is what is modern." - Karl Lagerfeld

How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe

Creating a capsule wardrobe is quite easy. It's all about what you LOVE and see yourself wearing for many seasons to come.

  • Pick a color scheme. Neutral is the safest way to go.
  • Choose items you love, fits you well, and wear frequently.
  • Stick with the basics as your foundation; jeans, dress, jacket, blazer, basic t-shirt, blouse.
  • Add 1-2 statement pieces that you can pair with other items in your capsule wardrobe.

Now that you know the what, why, how of capsule wardrobes, will you be creating one? Leave a comment and let me know!

Never knew exactly what a capsule wardrobe was. Makes so much sense though. A capsule wardrobe definitely comes in handy when I’m running a little late for work. I’m like you. Although neutral colors are nice, I NEED to have a splash of color here and there.

I actually started doing this in undergrad, and it made such a difference! You can’t go wrong with key staples, especially when they’re neutral and can be dressed up or down!

Never thought of a fashion capsule but that’s a great idea!! I guess I kinda already do it but it’s not very strategic. Love the hanging wardrobe idea.

I have never heard this term, but its a pretty good idea. I too am a fan of color and animal print so if i were to put one together it would include some color and DEFINITELY some animal print!
